What is Unix time?
Unix time (epoch time) counts the seconds that have elapsed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, not counting leap seconds. It is the standard way computers, databases and APIs store points in time because it is timezone-independent and easy to compare.
Seconds vs milliseconds
Many systems use 10-digit timestamps in seconds (like 1700000000), while JavaScript and Java use 13-digit values in milliseconds. This converter detects which one you entered.
The year 2038 problem
Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer will overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Unix timestamp to a date?
Multiply seconds by 1000 and pass the value to new Date() in JavaScript, or paste the timestamp above and read the local, UTC and ISO 8601 results.
How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
Current timestamps in seconds have 10 digits; in milliseconds they have 13 digits. This tool auto-detects based on magnitude.
Is Unix time affected by timezones?
No. A Unix timestamp always refers to the same instant everywhere. Timezones only matter when you display it as a calendar date.
