Which mode should I use?
Smart finds the photos and scans inside the PDF and recompresses them. Text, links, fonts and layout are untouched. It works best on scanned documents, brochures and reports with photos. Maximum converts every page to an image, which shrinks almost anything but makes text unselectable and unsearchable. Use it for scans you only need to read or print.
Honest limits
A PDF that is mostly text and vector graphics is already small, so Smart mode may not shrink it much, and the tool will tell you. Some image types (for example CMYK or indexed images) are left unchanged to avoid damaging colours.
Your files stay on your device
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, so confidential documents stay private. It works offline once the page has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my PDF get?
Scans and photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by 50-90%. Text-only PDFs shrink very little. The tool shows the exact result before you download.
Does compression reduce quality?
Images are recompressed with some loss. High quality is nearly indistinguishable on screen; Low is for email and quick sharing.
Why did my file not shrink?
It probably has few or no large images. Try Maximum mode if it is a scan, or leave it as it is.
