About these hashes
SHA-256 and SHA-512 are widely used for checksums, signatures and integrity checks. SHA-1 is shown for compatibility but is no longer collision-resistant, so avoid it for security. This tool does not offer MD5 for the same reason.
HMAC
Enter a secret key to get an HMAC, a keyed hash used to sign API requests and webhooks. The key stays in your browser.
Not for passwords
Do not store passwords with a plain SHA hash. Use a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded?
No. Hashes are computed locally with your browser's Web Crypto API.
Why is there no MD5?
MD5 is broken for security use and not provided by the browser's crypto API. Use SHA-256 or better.
What is the difference between a hash and an HMAC?
A hash depends only on the data. An HMAC also needs a secret key, so only someone with the key can produce or verify it.
