Current GST slabs in India

Since the GST 2.0 reforms took effect on 22 September 2025, most goods and services are taxed at 0%, 5%, 18% or 40%. The older 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged into 5% and 18%; they still apply to invoices issued before that date. Special low rates such as 3% (gold) and 0.25% (rough diamonds) continue to apply.

GST formulas

Add GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100; total = amount + GST. Remove GST: net = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate); GST = amount − net.

CGST, SGST and IGST

For a supply within one state, GST splits equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). For a supply between states, the full amount is charged as IGST.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST from a GST-inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the pre-GST amount, then subtract it from the inclusive amount to get the GST.

What are the GST rates in India now?

After GST 2.0 (effective 22 September 2025) the main rates are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, with special rates like 3% for gold. Always check the current notification for your specific goods or service.

When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?

IGST applies when the supplier and the place of supply are in different states or union territories, or for imports.
